Air Jordan XXI shoes
Just in time for the NBA All-Star game, the 21st Air Jordan sneaker will make its way to retail stores.  These shoes will retail for an astronomical $175.  I’m no expert on the fascination and sub-culture of basketball sneakers, but this price is just a tad too steep for the average consumer.  I mean, isn’t the purpose of a basketball sneaker to be light and comfortable so you feel like your jumping just a little bit higher for that lay-up or rebound?  To all you Air Jordan fans, I apologize for my ignorance.  I suppose it means much for than wearing comfortable shoes on the basketball court, it must be a fashion thing or something even more important.  Here is a look at the other sneakers that will be worn during the All-Star game, by other NBA stars.

Jordan will also auction off the entire set of Jordan brand sneakers (1-21) to help raise money for Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.  While this is a nice gesture to promote awareness, hopefully he has contributed his own money to this cause as well.

Ozzie bashing A-Rod Ozzie Guillen made the news again, this time for bashing A-Rod’s indecisiveness about whether to play for the US team or the Dominican Republic team for the World Baseball Classic.  Guillen who just recently became a U.S. citizen earlier this year, also criticized Nomar Garciaparra playing for the Mexican team, even though Garciaparra was born and raised in the U.S.  Garciapara went to college at Georgia Tech and was teammates with other players, Jay Payton and Jason Varitek.  Guillen who is originally from Venezuela, takes pride in his heritage.  It is definitely the start of baseball season when A-Rod starts getting bashed by his peers.

Can Darko ball? The jury is still out on him.Darko Milicic so far has drawn some unfavorable Sam Bowie comparisons in his short career, but he may finally have a chance to show what he can do on the basketball courts.  The Pistons trade Milicic, and backup PG Carlos Arroyo to the Orlando Magic for a first round pick (top 5 protected in 2007) or an 2008 unrestricted first round pick and C Kelvin Cato.  Detroit has activated Lindsey Hunter to assume the backup PG duties.

Yes, fans are already aware of Darko being known as the guy who was drafted after Lebron James and taken ahead of other studs such as Carmelo Anthony, Chris Bosh and Dwayne Wade.  One thing is for sure, NBA fans will now be looking through the box score of Orlando Magic games to check out Milicic’s progress.

Does Sammy Sosa belong in the HOF?According to the SportsNation poll, Sammy Sosa received only 39% of the 19,060 voters believing that he belongs in the Hall of Fame.  Even in the state of Illinois, where the Chicago Cubs play, Sosa still only got 40% of the 1,485 voters.  Even with the White Sox being the toast of town at the present moment, Chicago is still mostly a Cubs town.  I find the lack of support for Sosa surprising. The corked bat suspension, along with accusations of steroid use must be playing a huge factor even though Sosa is fifth all-time in career home runs.

Bobby Knight not answering questions about Indiana UniversityThe Indiana Hoosiers head coach Mike Davis may be heading into the unemployment line soon, but long time ex-coach for the Indiana Hooisers Bobby Knight sure doesn’t care or doesn’t want to get involved.  Perhaps it is because the hot rumor is that ex-Indiana hero Steve Alford may be next in line to be named head coach.  Bobby Knight and Alford had legendary arguments, while Alford was the star player for Knight during 1987 championship season.

Knight’s famous bad mood swing is back (or never left) on the recent interview that lasted about 10 seconds with Dana Jacobson of Cold Pizza.  Not even her charms could persuade Knight into sticking around after her first question regarding Indiana’s troubles this season.

J.J. Redick sets NCAA 3 point recordCongratulations to J.J. Redick on breaking the NCAA three point mark record by hitting 416 three pointers.  He passed Curtis Staples, who had 413 at Virginia from 1994-98.  Redick is closing in on the all-time ACC scoring leader record as well.  Redick passed Virginia’s Bryant Stith for fourth on the ACC career scoring list, and he remained on pace to pass Dickie Hemric at the top of the list. Hemric had 2,587 for Wake Forest, and Redick now trails by 60 points with five games remaining in the regular season.  Redick set the record last night in a win over Wake Forest.

TNA Wrestling logoSt. Louis Cardinal shortstop is the newest MLB player to be a part of TNA wrestling.  Eckstein was sitting in attendance during TNA’s last PPV Against All Odds, which was headlined by Christian Cage defeating Jeff Jarrett to claim the prestigious NWA Heavyweight Championship.

A.J. Pierzynski was the first to show up on TNA, at first most fans thought this was solely a guest appearance after the Chicago White Sox World Series victory, but he has recently signed a two year contract.  I guess A.J. will have a new career to jump into directly after baseball career ends.

Jose Lima signs with the New York MetsMets G.M. Omar Minaya has been blasted by fans and media alike, accusing him of acquiring an all-Latino team this off-season.  Some of the trades have been questionable, but for the most part it has been a fantastic off-season for the New York Mets.  Most Met fans did not approve of the Mike Cameron for Xavier Nady deal and the Kris Benson for Jorge Julio trade was the one that got most fans’ shorts in a bunch.  The signing of Lima to a minor league deal will provide insurance in case one of the pitchers from the rotation goes down.  Lima signed a $600,000 deal, plus incentives.  Lima is best-known for an all-star season with the Houston Astros, and an outstanding pitching performance in the 2004 Division series for the L.A. Dodgers.  He has had much more success while pitching for National League teams throughout his career.

L.A. Clippers acquire Vladimir RadmanovicThe Los Angeles Clippers acquired Vladimir Radmanovic from the SuperSonics for PF Chris Wilcox.  This moves strikes me as a message to Clipper fans that they are serious about contending this season.  Radmanovic, a free agent after this season is deadly from three-point range shooting at 38% for his career.  This move looks like it will absolve the brain freeze Clippers G.M. Elgin Baylor had during the 2002 draft drafting #8 Wilcox and #12 Melvin Ely in the lottery even though they already had Elton Brand as their starting power forward.

On Seattle’s standpoint, with PF Nick Collison recently breaking into the starting lineup and adding Wilcox to the roster, Seattle is probably ready to trade either Reggie Evans or Danny Fortson to straighten out this log-jam at the forward position.

Larry Hughes out another 6-8 weeksSorry to dampen the mood Cavs fans, especially after the impressive wins over the defending NBA champs San Antonio Spurs.  Looks like if the Cavs are going to make the post-season this year, it will be without arguably their second best player in Larry Hughes.  Hughes was supposed to come back from a broken right middle finger.  Hughes cashed in during last summer’s free agent market with a five-year, $60 million contract.  This move was to entice mega-star Lebron James to stay in Cleveland instead of testing the waters of free agency himself when the time comes.  Look for rumors to swirl around PF Drew Gooden once again, since the Cavs may now look to add another scoring threat or PG.
